Se7en- how does it suit its genre?

Se7en

Genre- Crime Thriller

  • This sequence includes images of somebody slicing the skin off their fingertips, this suggests violence, gore and danger. This makes is a convention of genre as these are themes that are normally very apparent in crime Thrillers
  • Secondly, the lighting featured is mainly low key, causing objects to look as if the shadows. This suggests that the character looking upon these things might have something to hide. This is a convention of genre as crime Thrillers normally have a character that poses questions and suspicion. Also, this kind of lighting is also used frequently within this genre in order to create a mysterious atmosphere
  • Finally, the non-diegetic sound used in this sequence are a collection of loud, high-pitched and harsh sounds. This causes quite a chilling and unsettling tone to work alongside the disturbing imagery. This is a convention of genre as this sort of atmosphere is commonly established in Crime and Psychological Thrillers
  • I like this opening as it's imagery and use of cinematography and editing is interesting, so it keeps the audiences attention and doesn't bore them. It also doesn't reveal too much of its plot to the audience, which is crucial at this early stage.
